On 15 April 2026, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) published the updated environmental management system standard, ISO 14001:2026. This update replaces the previous version, ISO 14001:2015, which is currently used by organisations worldwide to maintain ISO 14001 certification.
If your organisation is certified or working towards ISO 14001 certification, this update is important, but there is no need to panic. A structured transition period is in place, giving organisations time to adapt.
What is ISO 14001:2026?
ISO 14001:2026 is the latest revision of the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It sets out the requirements for organisations to improve environmental performance, comply with environmental regulations, and achieve sustainability objectives.
It applies to organisations of all sizes and sectors and is widely used as the benchmark for effective environmental management systems.
ISO 14001:2026 transition period
Organisations certified to ISO 14001:2015 now have a three-year transition period to move to the updated standard.
This transition window means:
- There is no immediate requirement to change systems
- Organisations can plan updates alongside existing audit cycles
- Implementation can be phased and risk-managed
A gradual approach is expected across all industries.
Certification bodies and audit readiness
At this stage [April 2026], certification bodies are not yet issuing certificates to ISO 14001:2026. This is because they are awaiting accreditation from UKAS and other national accreditation bodies.
In addition:
- Auditors will require training on the updated ISO 14001 standard
- Competence must be demonstrated before audits can fully transition
- Certification activity will scale up over time as readiness improves
What should organisations do now?
For organisations currently holding or working towards ISO 14001 certification, the recommended approach is:

- Avoid making unnecessary immediate system changes
- Begin reviewing how environmental management system requirements may evolve
- Plan for transition within the three-year timeframe
A structured approach will help minimise disruption and ensure a smooth transition to the updated ISO 14001 standard.
