As UKAS accredited ISO 42001 certification gets nearer, and ANAB accreditation already exists, our early adopter scheme for ISO 42001 is moving to business-as-usual, and we learned a lot from those brave organisations willing to go first!
We’re proud to now be a leading ISO 42001 consultancy with a proven track record and consultants who are both trained and experienced to back it up.
ISO 42001 Testimonial
“Assent’s support in both implementing a new [AI] management system, and auditing against the requirements of the newly published ISO 42001 standard played a vital role in ensuring Darktrace was ready to proceed with the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits, and ultimately, achieve certification with the British Standards Institution (BSI), amongst some of the first in our industry.“

If you are considering ISO 42001 for your organisation, here are some key learnings that may help you!
Defining the Scope of your AIMS
As with any ISO Management system, defining the scope is key. The ISO 42001 standard is designed to be applicable to AI System users, integrators and developers.
Some organisations will fit in to multiple of those roles, but when it comes to the scope of your AIMS you may decide to expand over time to different products and processes.
Our ISO 42001 Consultants can work with you to define the best scope.
AI Competence is Key
Throughout the ISO 42001 certification process we found competence was continually tested and questioned. This includes the competence of those using, integrating and developing AI systems, as well as those involved in the AIMS itself, i.e. internal audits, management representatives etc.
Competence is not easily defined but we found a balance between formal AI training, self-study and experience, documented through a competence profile, skills matrix or other solution.
Quizzes and appraisals also contribute to monitoring people’s ongoing competence.
An AI Ethics or Governance Committee Helps
Although not explicit or mandatory in the standard, the most successful implementations we’ve worked on have involved a group of key stakeholders who oversee the organisation’s AI systems and provide balanced guidance on issues as they emerge.
This also allows for an evidence trail to justify the decisions made throughout the lifecycle of the AI System.
AI Lifecycle Matters
A key control of the standard focuses on lifecycle of the AI system, including the decommissioning / ending of the AI system.
Although that might not be in sight now, it’s important to show consideration of the full AI Lifecycle.
